Dr. Joseph Mbithi Mutua PhD
Joseph Mutua holds a PhD in Agricultural Engineering from Cranfield University, UK. He is a former Senior Research Officer with Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI). He has over 20 years’ experience in both on-station and on-farm based research, centered mainly on tillage mechanization, animal traction and performance, rural transport systems, and environmental conservation. His specific areas of specialization include Conservation Agriculture Value-Chains, Animal Power Economics and Business Planning, Intermediate Means of Transport for rural transport needs and agricultural input and output marketing systems. He is an accomplished trainer and consultant in the above areas of interest, having taken up assignments in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Kenya with major organizations such as FAO, WV, GIZ, Minagri-Rwanda, CARITAS, ADRA, ALN, Eco-Agriculture Partners and Hello Tractor among ohers. He has published widely.
Joseph has worked in various capacities namely; Head of National Soil & Water Management Research Program at KARI; Technical Manager; Director and Team Leader at the Kenya Network for Dissemination of Agricultural Technologies (KENDAT). In addition, Joseph has held various positions in country networks such the Kenya Landcare Network (Chair); Kenya Eco-agriculture Working Group (Team Leader); and International Soil Tillage Research Organization (treasurer, Kenya chapter). He is the Managing Director of Lo-Tech Ventures LTD, a Kenya Registered company that specializes in agricultural and industrial equipment/implements for the small to medium-scale farmer and entrepreneur. Joseph is also the director of Agrimech Africa Limited in charge of operations.
When not busy in his various formal engagements, Joseph spends time in his workshop developing agricultural tools and equipment for smallholder mechanization and drudgery alleviation, and in the rural areas working with community groups to promote environmental conservation through tree planting and construction of soil conservation structures. He has mobilized communities to plant thousands of trees in fragile hotspots, schools, churches and road sides.
